Lab-Grown vs. Mined Diamonds: What's the Difference?
Share
If you've started shopping for an engagement ring, you've probably seen the term "lab-grown diamond" — and wondered how it compares to a mined one. The short answer: at their core, they're the same.
They're the same material
A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It has the identical chemical makeup, crystal structure, hardness, and optical properties as a diamond formed in the earth. The same fire, the same sparkle, the same durability — graded by the same independent labs.
How each one is made
Mined diamonds form over millions of years deep underground and are brought to the surface through mining. Lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled setting that recreates those same conditions, growing a diamond over a matter of weeks. The result is chemically indistinguishable — even a jeweler needs specialized equipment to tell them apart.
The difference you'll notice: value
Because the growing process is more efficient, lab-grown diamonds typically cost significantly less than mined diamonds of comparable size and quality. For the same budget, that often means a larger or finer center stone — or more room for the setting and details you really want.
Certification matters either way
Whichever you choose, insist on independent certification. Every diamond in our collection is IGI-certified, so you know exactly what you're getting — carat weight, cut, color, and clarity, verified.
